The biological function of eIF4E phosphorylation has been contreversial. Some studies report that eIF4E Ser209 phosphorylation enhance translation in general, while others conclude that Ser209 has no effect, or even reduces translation.
Recently, Ser209 phosphorylation site has been reported essential for
eIF4E's oncogenic action in mice.
